Flood resilience in action

How Wioniq Helped Pudasjärvi achieve flood resilience through intelligent solutions.

Modernizing Pudasjärvi's stormwater systems for better flood management.

Background
Pudasjärvi, a municipality in Finland surrounded by three major lakes and intersected by the Iijoki River, faces regular flooding caused by autumn rains and spring snowmelt. With aging stormwater infrastructure, including pump stations dating back to the 1980s and 1990s, the municipality recognized the need to modernize its systems to improve flood resilience. In 2022, Pudasjärvi launched a project to enhance flood management by upgrading it

Overcoming outdated infrastructure and improving flood response.

Flood resilience in action

The main challenge Pudasjärvi faced was the outdated infrastructure that struggled to cope with seasonal flooding. With pump stations operating on old technology and limited automation, monitoring and response to flood risks were inefficient. The municipality needed a solution to provide real-time data on water flow and pump performance, as well as predictive maintenance to prevent flooding and reduce operational costs.

Wioniq's platform transforms flood management in Pudasjärvi.

Adaptations
The project focused on upgrading Pudasjärvi's stormwater systems by integrating 17 automated control units with the cloud-based Wioniq platform, provided in collaboration with Pipelife Finland. This setup enabled real-time monitoring, better performance analytics, and remote-control capabilities for flood management, ensuring improved efficiency and compliance with modern standards.

Collaborations
Wioniq delivered Pudasjärvi solutions via Slatek in collaboration with Pipelife Finland, which leveraged their long-standing partnership to tackle the complexities of integrating modern tech with aging infrastructure. The project relied heavily on the expertise of all involved to replace outdated sensors, pumps, and other components.

Immediate benefits and long-term impact of the flood resilience project.

Integrating modern solutions with legacy Infrastructure.
The integration of modern technology with outdated infrastructure proved to be a significant challenge. However, the collaboration between Pipelife, Slatek, and Wioniq overcame this, ensuring a smooth transition and minimal disruption.

Pudasjärvi's improved flood resilience and future preparedness.
Pudasjärvi is now better equipped to handle future flood risks, not only improving safety and sustainability but also positioning itself as a leader in modern flood resilience. This project has set a benchmark for municipalities aiming to modernize their stormwater systems and prepare for a changing climate.
